Phillip S. Rea

Phillip S. Rea is professor emeritus in the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management in the College of Natural Resources at North Carolina State University. Dr. Rae joined NC State University as an assistant professor in 1978 and served as department head from 1987-2003. He earned his doctorate at Indiana University, a M.S. from SUNY Cortland, and a B.S. degree from West Liberty State College. Prior to pursuing a career in higher education, Dr. Rae has held positions as school environmental education coordinator and as a teacher and coach. He began his park and recreation work as a seasonal employee at Oglebay Park in Wheeling, WV. He served as an intern with the National Recreation and Park Association and as Superintendent of Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, one of the largest municipal parks in the United States. He currently serves as the NC State University liaison to the Revenue Development and Management School and as director of the new NRPA Director's School, both held at Oglebay Resort Park. Dr. Rae served as a member of the board of trustees of the National Recreation and Park Association and as president of the Society of Park and Recreation Educators. He is one of 25 educators invited to membership in the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration where he serves as a member of the board of directors. He has served as president of the North Carolina Recreation and Park Society. Dr. Rae received the John Endwright Outstanding Alumni Award from the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation and the Garrett Eppley Outstanding Alumni Award from the Department of Recreation and Park Administration at Indiana University. He has also received the Fellow Award from the North Carolina Recreation and Park Society and the Outstanding Service Award from the Indiana Park and Recreation Association. He is a member of the NCSU Academy of Outstanding Teachers and a recipient of the outstanding teacher award in the College of Natural Resources. He has authored or co-authored 40 publications and has made over 100 professional presentations.
