About the Author(s)

John O. Spengler

John Spengler is currently an associate professor in the Department of Tourism, Recreation, and Sport Management at the University of Florida. He received a Ph.D. from Indiana University in human performance, a law degree (J.D.) from the University of Toledo, a master's degree in recreation, parks and tourism from Clemson University, and a B.A. in exercise science from Wake Forest University.

He has written numerous articles on risk management and sport law issues, and is the author/co-author of four books. Dr. Spengler received the Distinguished Scholar Award from the AAHPERD Safety and Risk Management Council, was named the "2002 Teacher of the Year" for the College of Health and Human Performance at the University of Florida, and twice named "Who's Who Among America's Teachers." He also has practical experience having supervised and taught recreational sports, and consulted on sport injury cases. At the University of Florida, Dr. Spengler teaches primarily in the area of legal issues and risk management in sport, recreation, and hospitality.

Bruce B. Hronek

Bruce Hronek is a professor in the Department of Recreation and Park Administration at Indiana University, assistant department chair, senior fellow in the Eppley Institute, and director of the National Center for Recreation Resources. Hronek conducts seminars nationally and internationally on legal liability, philanthropy, recreation, and natural resource management.

He received a law degree (MLS) from Antioch Law School, a masters of business administration from Western International University, and his B.S. in forestry at the University of Idaho. Hronek worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 33 years.

Hronek is the author or co-author of three books including Risk Management for Recreation, Parks, and Leisure Services (2011), and Legal Liability in Recreation, Sports, and Tourism (2007), and Forests of Discord, Options for Governing Our National Forest and Federal Public Lands, (1999), and a number of recreation, natural resource, and law articles. He has numerous teaching awards including two University Teaching Excellence Awards and two University Trustees outstanding Teaching Awards at Indiana University.
