Meet the Team - Sagamore-Venture

Joseph J. Bannon, Sr., Ph.D.


Dr. Joseph J. Bannon, Sr. has over 50 years of experience in the parks, recreation, the leisure field, and in publishing.

A recognized leader in both fields, Dr. Bannon has received numerous awards for outstanding service.

He began his career in 1957 as the director of Parks and Recreation in Leonia, New Jersey and moved on to Topeka, Kansas as the director in 1962.

In 1966 he joined the staff at the University of Illinois, and in 1972, Bannon was appointed the head of the Department of Leisure Studies.

Dr. Bannon developed Management Strategy in 1977. The publication was dedicated to disseminating management information to parks and recreation professionals throughout the world.

Dr. Bannon has also written many articles and authored and co-authored more than 11 books.

Dr. Bannon retired from the University of Illinois in 1991 and now works full time acquiring and developing titles for Sagamore.

Peter L. Bannon, MBA


Peter Bannon joined Sagamore in 1988 as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.

He has a BS from the University of Illinois and an MBA from the University of New Haven.

He has been active in the publishing industry for over 20 years, and was once named the Mid-America Publishing Association’s “Man of the Year.”

He has gained extensive experience in management, marketing, administration, and financial management.

Bannon was promoted to the position of president and oversees general operations of the company.

Susan M. Davis, BS

Director of Production and Development

Susan Davis has been with the Bannon-owned companies Sports Publishing and Sagamore as head of the production department for 30 years.

She has a BS in English and Communications from Illinois State University and worked as a teacher for several years before joining Sagamore in 1987.

During her tenure at Sports Publishing and Sagamore Davis has edited, designed, and overseen the production of hundreds of books, journals, and newsletters, as well as authored several trade books.

She is responsible for all editorial and design functions and also secures and supervises all freelance editors and any additional personnel utilized by Sagamore in the production process.

Davis has attended numerous workshops, classes, conferences, and trade shows to keep abreast of the latest trends in management and book production, and has given presentations to the Mid-America Publishers Association regarding efficient book production.


Misti Gilles - Sales and Marketing Manager

Misti has been with Sagamore Publishing for 3 years. She has a B.S in Communications from Oklahoma State University. Before joining Sagamore she was a Senior Sales Representative for Cengage Learning for 14 years. She is responsible for all textbook sales.

Misti loves ice hockey and skating. She drags her boys to rinks all over the Mid-West shouting "get yer skates on!" One January, she flooded the Sagamore foyer so she'd have something to do at lunchtime.


Kim Vecchio - Sales & Marketing Assistant

Kim works with faculty at colleges and universities to supply products when needed; authors to provide marketing plans and flyers, support for conferences and other promotional needs; and journal editors and boards to provide marketing and sales information and content for promotions.

She is a seasoned marketing associate with 8 of her career years in the publishing and higher education industry. And, as if a full-time career and a family weren’t enough to fill her time, Kim is also pursuing an Associate’s degree in Business Administration Technology.

When not at work or school, Kim has her own taxi service that appears to be free...just ask her kids!


Mark Atkinson - Tech & Web Development Manager

Mark oversees Sagamore's web presence and IT requirements. Mark has over 20 years experience in programming, web design, website usability, SEO, social media, and content management systems.

He also assists editors and authors in operating the journal management system which hosts the eight journals published by Sagamore.

Mark has three daughters who simultaneously indulge him and keep him misinformed.


Glenda Bates - Office Manager

Glenda Bates has been the Office Manager with Sagamore for 17 years. She attended Parkland College in Champaign, IL, and has taken continuing education and accounting courses.

Glenda oversees customer service and supervises the Sagamore warehouse. Her responsibilities include administering all human resources duties and tracking and maintaining all royalties, AR, AP, print bids, payroll, and financials for the company.

In her free time (currently Fridays 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm, and Sundays 11:00 am to 2:30 pm), Glenda enjoys camping, sewing, decorating, traveling, and she stays active with her 14 grandchildren.


Marissa Willison - Graphic Designer

Duties include: book cover design, book interior design/layout, creation of marketing images and advertisements, as well as various other duties for Sagamore-Venture.

When she’s not too busy daydreaming about the next big Sagamore-Venture title to hit the shelves, Marissa enjoys being outside doing almost any activity (aside from running) and is often accompanied by her dog, Piper, who is a lab-whippet mix. Marissa graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a BFA in May 2014 and has been with Sagamore-Venture since October 2014.


Amy Dagit - Production Coordinator

Amy edits and designs books and journals, working with authors and editors throughout the production process. She has a BA in English and a copyediting certificate from UC San Diego Extension.

She has been with Sagamore since July 2011.

Amy loves to travel with her husband and is always thinking about their next adventure!


Terri Vickers - Administrative Assistant, Journals

Joined Sagamore-Venture in 2014. Provides customer service for all journal needs including renewals, on-line access, and claims. Wanted a change from 25+ years in medical administrative work, and enjoy my job at Sagamore-Venture.

Manages individual and group memberships for The Academy of Leisure Sciences.

"I enjoy spending time with my husband, my cat Milo, and two children who have flown the coop. I especially enjoy spending time with my neighbor, who is 91 years old, and a WWII veteran. There are not many left, and I like to let him know how much he is appreciated."


Amber Jones-Bantz - Administrative Assistant

Amber has been a part of the Sagamore team since 2016. She is responsible for the administrative duties including answering phones, placing orders, processing returns and credit memos, and many more.

When not at work, Amber loves spending time with her husband and two children. She enjoys cooking, reading, and attending her son's sporting events. On Sundays you can find her at church and then watching New England Patriots football!


Lori Johnston - Administrative Assistant

I provide customer service for book orders, book returns and credit memos. I am new member at Sagamore, I joined in April 2017.

In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my 2 sons and my 3 ½ year old grandson, who keeps me on my toes. I recently moved to Mahomet, and it is a nice small town to live in.
