Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Illinois in 1994, Professor McDonald taught at Washington State University and Clemson University. During his 12 years as head of the Department of Leisure Studies (renamed Recreation, Sport and Tourism) at Illinois, he led the department through two cycles of accreditation, a department name change, substantial undergraduate and graduate curriculum revisions, and the development of one of the first online master’s degrees in the field of parks, recreation, sport and tourism. His administrative experience also includes serving as acting director, National Park Service Cooperative Park Studies Unit while at Clemson University. In 2008, Professor McDonald was elected to the position of senior fellow in the American Leisure Academy.
