Dr. Smith has been a member of the faculty of Indiana State University since 1982, and chair of the Department of Recreation and Sport Management since 1983.
He earned hsi Ph.d. at the University of Utah in 1974 majoring in Leisure Studies and minoring in Geography with a specialization in resource planning.
Dr. Smith also has pursued a career in the reserve military and served as the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Officer for all Marine Corps forces during Operation Desert Storm. Since then he has served as recreation consultant to the Director, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Support Activity, headquarters Marine Corps at Quantico, VA, and to the Commander Marine Corps Forces Atlantic, Camp Lejeune, NC.
He has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Armed Forces Recreation Society, a branch of the National Recreation and Park Association, and was President for 1997.
He was recognized as the outstanding alumnus of the Department of Leisure Studies, University of Utah, in 1996.
