Originally published in 1978, this monograph integrates and summarizes the research on and theorizing about play behavior conducted by the members of the Motor Performance and Play Research Laboratory, Children's Research Center, University of Illinois, from 1966 through 1973.

This research followed several themes; for example some members were studying activity patterns, others were studying stereotyped behavior, and yet others were concerned with preference for objects and peers.

This book contains six chapters, some are essays and some are reviews of research.

Please note: This is a reprint of the original book, published in 1978.
