Physical Education: A Literacy-Based Approach is a book that is intended to facilitate the understanding and application of the ELA Common Core State Standards for both inservice and preservice physical education teachers.

The book includes chapters that detail what the ELA Common Core State Standards are as well as how to implement and assess them in physical education.

Features of the book include several examples of how to link the ELA Common Core State Standards to both the national physical education standards and the national grade level outcomes for physical education.

In addition, two chapters provide descriptions of specific activities that align with the ELA Common Core State Standards. Today in education, physical education teachers are being required to support literacy through teaching physical education content.

Alisa R. James

Alisa R. James, EdD, is a professor at the College at Brockport, State University of New York.

Alisa received her bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University in physical education, master’s degree from the University of Illinois in exercise physiology, and her doctoral degree in education (physical education pedagogy) at the University of Massachusetts–Amherst.

Before entering higher education, James spent eight years teaching elementary and high school physical education.

She has been a physical education teacher educator since 2002.

She has published in several journals, including The Journal of Teaching in Physical Education, Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy, The Physical Educator, and The Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Mara Manson

Mara Manson is an associate professor at Adelphi University.   Mara received her bachelor’s degree from The College at Brockport in Physical Education, master’s degree from Hofstra University in health education and her doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia University in curriculum and instruction in physical education. Mara’s expertise is in physical education pedagogy and curriculum design. She has numerous publications to her credit and has presented at local, state, regional, national and international conferences.
